Hell’s History: the fight to end workplace deaths and injuries

with Tom Sandborn

“They die in flames, or crushed beneath fallen walls or runaway vehicles, or slowly as industrial poisons do their lethal work. Every year, a thousand Canadian workers die, killed by workplace injury and disease. In some cases, the deaths and injuries can be directly traced to negligent decisions by owners and managers who put profit and speedup ahead of worker safety.”

These are the words of veteran labour reporter and social justice activist Tom Sandborn.  At this April pizza educational, Tom will discuss his book Hell’s History, which tells the story of some of these unnecessary deaths and of a quarter century of campaigning by the United Steelworkers Union and the Canadian labour movement to change and enforce the criminal code.

Participants are also encouraged to join with the VDLC to attend the April 28th Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job – 10:30 am at Hastings Park behind the skateboard area off Renfrew.
