June Regular Meeting Update

Thank you to all who joined us for our June regular meeting. At this meeting we heard from guest speaker Leigha Worth, about the important work of the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre.

Delegates heard reports from the President, committees, affiliated unions, the Canadian Labour Congress, and BC Federation of Retired Union Members.

The following motions were also adopted the delegates present:

Spending Authorizations
THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL authorize the following expenditures:

• Sponsorship of either two $250 scholarships, or one $500 scholarship for this 2025 Junior Black Achievement Awards, at a total cost of $500.

Canada Post Dispute
THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL reiterate its unwavering and complete support for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers in their ongoing dispute with Canada Post; and

THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL FURTHER demand that the federal government respect free and fair collective bargaining, and the right to strike; and

THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL FINALLY encourage the entire labour movement and all workers to support the postal workers however possible in the event of a strike or lockout.

No Golden Dome
THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL call upon the Canadian Labour Congress to oppose Canada’s participation in the Trump regime’s “Golden Dome” defense system.

Coalition of Concerned Individuals & Organizations Against Labour Trafficking
THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL sign and circulate the Justice 4 the Victims of The Promise Land Consultancy community petition; and

THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL FURTHER support the “A Year of Resistance” event (planned for late June) by endorsing, promoting, and contributing $250 toward costs; and

THE VANCOUVER AND DISTRICT LABOUR COUNCIL WILL FINALLY join the soon-to-be formed Coalition of Concerned Individuals & Organizations Against Labour Trafficking.

No Bill C-2
THE VANCOUVER AND LABOUR COUNCIL WILL write to Prime Minister Mark Carney, and NDP interim leader Don Davies, opposing the adoption of Bill C-2 “The Strong Borders Act”, and call on the CLC to oppose its adoption as well.

Our next meeting will take place on July 15th.
