Day of Mourning

April 1, 2026

On April 28 each year we remember those who were killed on the job, and to recommit to working to ensure that every worker goes home safe at the end of every shift.

This year we are pleased to support two events to mark this important day.

In Sea-to-Sky:

Day of Mourning
Squamish
Sunday, April 26, 11:00 AM
O’Siyam Pavilion Park
Hosted by: CUPE Local 2269, VDLC

Celeste Bickford
Celeste is the President of Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2269, representing approximately 250 municipal workers in the Squamish area.

Speaker: Stephen von Sychowski
Stephen is the President of the Vancouver & District Labour Council, which represents over 90 local affiliated unions with approximately 60,000 members in Metro Vancouver and Sea-to-Sky.

Speaker: Genevieve Cragg
In February 2021, Genevieve Cragg learned that she had become a parent who had lost a son. Charley was a crew member on board the MV Ingenika, when the small tugboat crew encountered horrific storm conditions and sank in the turbulent, frigid waters of the Gardner Canal. Charley and tug captain Troy Pearson both died as a result.

In honour of her son, Genevieve has been advocating for stronger safety requirements and a new safety culture within the uninspected class of tugboats. She hopes sharing her experience will encourage government bodies as well as employers in the industry to understand the current gaps and work together to embrace a purposeful set of changes that will provide safety for mariners in the future.

In Metro Vancouver:

Day of Mourning
New Westminster
Tuesday, April 28, 11:00am
Westminster Pier Park
Hosted by: New Westminster & District Labour Council
