Open Letter Opposing Deportation of Mohamed Harkat

December 10, 2019

The VDLC is continuing to call for an end to security certificates and for Mohamed Harkat to be allowed to remain in Canada as a refugee.

The VDLC has supported the plight of Mohamed Harkat, who was placed under a security certificate and faced the potential of deportation to Algeria where he would face imprisonment and torture. For seventeen years Mr. Harkat has lived in fear that he may be taken from his family and his home in Canada and sent to an unknown fate. We call on the Federal government to take action to finally end this ordeal. In an open letter by the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG), Amnesty International Canada and the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and endorsed by many others including the VDLC, the Liberal government is called upon to make good on its words about human rights.
