The Vancouver and District Labour Council (VDLC) has joined the call for a public inquiry into organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering in British Columbia.

“Our province has been gripped by a series of ongoing crises in recent years; namely, housing affordability, fentanyl-related deaths, and money laundering which is now believed to be in the billions. These are interconnected crises, and ones which require comprehensive investigation followed by appropriate legislative and legal action,” said President Stephen von Sychowski.

A recent Research Co. poll sponsored by the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU), a VDLC affiliate, showed that 77% of British Columbians are in favour of an inquiry, 80% supported the establishment of an anti-corruption office, and 84% considered this an important voting issue.

“These are issues which deeply affect our members and their communities every day,” von Sychowski said. “The public is demanding answers and deserves to get them. I will be writing to Premier Horgan and Attorney General Eby to urge them to launch an inquiry.”

The labour council is also encouraging its affiliated members, and the general public, to add their name to the call for a public inquiry at publicinquirynow.ca

The Vancouver and District Labour Council represents nearly 100 local unions and 60,000 affiliated members in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Richmond, and West Vancouver.
